Tannic acid (CAS Reg. No. 1401-55-4), or hydrolyzable gallotannin, is a complex polyphenolic organic structure that yields gallic acid and either glucose or quinic acid as hydrolysis products. It is a yellowish-white to light brown substance in the form of an amorphous, bulky powder, glistening scales, or spongy masses.

In water treatment, tannin can also be used to purify wastewater containing protein and surfactants, so that the formation of flocculant precipitation and then remove, to reduce COD, avoid protein organic matter in water odor.  

Tannic acid can be used as a scale remover in boilers and heat exchangers due to its chelating properties with many metal ions.

Tannic acid complexed with Ca2 + and Mg2+ in the water, thus reducing the hardness of the water and softening the water in the boiler, and its complex could further form a large size of dirt deposition and discharge with the sewage    


Tannic acid is the best precipitant for wet extraction of germanium, and the germanium precipitation rate can reach more than 90%.  

The effects of tannic acid, and their combination reagents on the flotation behavior of pyrite and chalcopyrite were studied by single mineral. The results show that the combination reagent of tannic acid is technically feasible at pH 9.5 and can realize the separation of copper and sulfur under low alkali condition  

Tannic acid, gallic acid, etc., can be used as rust prevention and preservative of iron metals (iron, steel) used in industrial, construction, water transport and port equipment.  The o-phenolic hydroxyl group in tannic acid molecule can react with Fe3 + in rust to produce black stable and dense chelate - iron tannic acid, which firmly covers the surface of steel, thus preventing the development of rust. Moreover, tannin's oxygen absorption ability also plays a role in preventing the oxidation of steel surface, but also can inhibit the reproduction of iron-eating bacteria.  

Rare metal smelting, from lead and zinc ore or dust to extract germanium, from solution to extract thorium, polonium and other rare metals, from chalcopyrite lead and copper.
